Valentino Rossi's Hypercar Dream: A Tough Road Ahead
The iconic MotoGP champion, Valentino Rossi, has his sights set on a new challenge: racing a hypercar in the World Endurance Championship (WEC). But, as he candidly reveals, this dream may remain elusive in the near future. Rossi's passion for prototype machinery is no secret, as he believes it aligns more with his driving style compared to the GT3 cars he's been racing post-MotoGP retirement in 2021.
A glimmer of hope emerged when Rossi tested the BMW M Hybrid V8 at the 2024 Bahrain rookie test, finishing just a tenth behind Arthur Leclerc in a Ferrari 499P. However, this promising performance didn't translate into a top-class opportunity, and Rossi found himself back in the WEC's LMGT3 class for the 2025 season.
The veteran racer, now 46, has been tirelessly working on securing a Hypercar program for the 2026 season, but these plans have yet to come to fruition. Rossi laments, "The hypercar is more akin to a motorcycle, and I thrive in that environment. We've been striving to race in the hypercar category this year and next, but it's been an uphill battle. It's a challenging prospect, and I'm uncertain if it will materialize."
And here's where it gets controversial: Rossi considers the idea of participating in individual Hypercar races, rather than a full-season campaign. He acknowledges, "It's a viable option, but the norm is to commit to a whole season. BMW has a deep pool of drivers, many of them younger. It's a missed opportunity, as I feel at home with the car. But the future is uncertain. I'm open to partial race involvement."
Rossi's exclusive partnership with Vincent Vosse's WRT team, BMW's factory partner in the Hypercar category, could offer a potential gateway to selected IMSA rounds, especially the Michelin Endurance Cup events requiring additional drivers. However, Rossi dismisses the idea of the 2026 IMSA season-opener at Daytona, where BMW traditionally fields four drivers per GTP car.
With Rossi's three-year contract as a factory BMW driver concluding this year, the championship he'll compete in next year remains a mystery. He admits, "We're still undecided on the championship. WEC is definitely an option, and we'll be discussing this with BMW in the coming months. We'll strive to identify the most suitable program."
