Get ready for a thrilling theatrical experience as Columbus North High School brings S.E. Hinton's iconic novel, "The Outsiders," to life on stage! This fall, the school's talented students will present a captivating adaptation that explores the complex dynamics between two social groups, the Greasers and the Socs. But here's where it gets controversial... these seemingly opposing factions will collide, challenging our perceptions of social constructs and the judgments we make based on appearance and wealth.
"The Outsiders" is set in 1965 Oklahoma, where the Greasers, representing the poorer kids from rough neighborhoods, find themselves constantly at odds with the Socs, the richer kids with time and money on their hands. However, the narrative takes an unexpected turn when 14-year-old Ponyboy Curtis, the story's narrator, and his best friend Johnny Cade, find themselves on the run after a tragic incident.
Director Justine Lykins emphasizes the importance of this story, stating, "It's about breaking down narrow social constructs and realizing that everyone, regardless of their background, is capable of both good and bad."
With a guy-heavy cast this year, Lykins chose "The Outsiders" for its powerful message and the opportunity to showcase the talents of her students. Auditions were held in September, and the show features two alternating casts, ensuring a unique experience for each performance.
Lykins shares, "Having two casts has been a blessing. They've been working together beautifully, and it's fascinating to see how each cast interprets the characters and lines differently, almost making it feel like two distinct shows."
Junior Lou Grafelman, who plays Ponyboy in Thursday and Saturday's shows, reflects on the challenge of having two casts, but also the benefit of watching someone else portray the same role. He expresses his love for storytelling and the opportunity to showcase a world that may be unfamiliar to the audience.
Stacie Simmons, a sophomore playing Cherry Valence in Thursday and Saturday's shows, shares her excitement about being cast as Cherry. She believes that "The Outsiders" is an important story to tell young adults, as it teaches valuable lessons about avoiding stereotypes and understanding the complexities of human nature.
So, mark your calendars! Performances will be held Thursday through Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are available at onthestage.tickets/show/columbus-north-high-school, with prices ranging from $6 to $12.
